APRIL. 28 1894 THE LOS ANQELE8 SUNK- Six Oat of Eighty-five Perish All the Others Gain the Shore. The freight and passenger steamer, Los Angeles struck on a rock off Point Sur, near Monterey Bay, on Sunday morning at about three oclock, and in half an hour had sunk in six fathoms of water.

The panic stricken passengers were crowded into the life boats and half clad and shivering, put out to sea in a cold drizzle. Tuere were 49 passengers and the crew numbered 36. The S. L. O.

He has sold his interest in the Garey town site and other property, only retaining his orchard interests in this valley. Fred Lewis of the Times office who is out on a month's vacation was doing some fancy riding near Pizmo last on Clarence AA'haley 's fine saddle animal. AAith considerable emotion he declared that he had obeyed the orders to the best of his ability, and that he had not been careless. It xvas a hazy night he said and Point Sur light could barely be seen. He attributed the disaster to a heavy current which carried the vessel in shore and upon the rocks.

After hearing the testimony of the crexv and several passengers, the jury returned a verdict finding the disaster due to Rvk-fogels disobedience, aud charged liim xvith criminal negligence and carelessness. A xvarrant was at once issued for Ryk-fogels arrest and he xvas soon taken into custody by Constable Diaz. TRACK NOTES- The Standbys at the Traqk Still Doing Good Work.
