Queen Mary, popularly known "Bloody Mary, has not been pleasantly drawn for ua by history, but certain reoords at the time when she was young princess, occupying the dangerous position of doubtful heir to the throne of England, indicate that she was not without human kindness.

Mr. Rich aid Davey, in his history of Mary Tudor, quotes from the princess "privy purse expenses. Mary had been forbidden to call the Princess Elizabeth by any title, but it is pleasant to note that she refers to her affectionately as "my little sister. She sends her brother, afterward Ed ward VI, a frock which she had embroidered for him and gave her sister Elizabeth a cramoisie satin kirtle. Again, she sends a box with Bilver needlework in jt far her "Sister Elizabeth, and also worked a cap for her baby brother and made his nurse, "Mother a present of a bonnet and frontlets which 'cost 20 shillings.

Most singular among the gifts of the period, however, is that presented by Lady Lisle to Duke Philip of Bavaria after the duke had visited Lord Lisle at Calais. "My lord, she writes to her spouse from Calais after Lisle and Duke Philip had set out for England, "I send you my toothpicker. 1 thought to have given it to the duke while he was here, but it was not then at my hand. I send it to him because when be was here I did see him wear a pin to pick bis teeth withal And I pray you to show him that it has been mine these seven years. A proprietorship in a toothpick of seven years date would hardly be a rec ommendation nowadays.

Four Bulky Deeds Covering the Pacific Coast Railway- From Mobning Fbess of April 27. FouF lengthy deeds, containing a total of 22,000 words, have been lied with County Recorder Rasey.

They cover the sale of the Pacific Coast Railway and other property on foreclosure in the suit of the Farmers Loan and Trust Company vs. The Oregon Improvement Company. By the first deed Eben Smith, of Seattle, Master Commissioner, transfers to John I. Waterbury, of Morristown, N. and T.

Jefferson Coolidge, Boston, shares in the Pacific Coast Steamship Company and the Pacific Coast Railway Company, and otJiCr valuable property in the west. The second deed is by John I. Waterbury and T. Jefferson Coolidge, to the Pacific Coast Company, a corporation existing under the laws of New Jersey, covering the same property. The third is between The Oregon Improvement Company and The Pacific Coast Company, and the fourth between The Farmers Loan and Trust Company and The Pacific Coast Com pany.

This places The Pacific Coast Company in possession of the Pacific Coast Railway, extending from Los Olivos in this county, to Port Harford, in San Luis Obispo county; and all ware houses and rolling stock, of the company. The property described in the deeds also includes the 6teamers Umatilla, Walla Walla, Willamette, Corona, City of Mexico, City of Pueblo, Pomona and City of Topeka. Tbe different considerations range from $400,000 to over $1,000,000. IN THE SUPERIOR COURT. Mrs.

A letter from Santa Barbara making inquiry as to the amount of work being done at the front on the railroad, came recently to this office. Mr. Church, the expressman, who makes daily trips to the front, says that within the past few weeks the number of teams at work has been increased from twelve to fifty; that these are now at work on a large fill that must be completed before any other work can be done. That when this is finished, it will be comparatively easy grading until Honda creek is reached, where a very long, high and expensive viaduct is to be built, which will take months to construct. Everything points to the fulfillment of Mr.

Huntingtons promises to have the work pushed to completion as soon as practicable. It takes time to get a force, such as will be required to complete this, road in the (next twelve months, in working order. There are fully twelve great steel bridges and viaducts to put in; some of them an eighth of a mile long, besides innumerable stone culverts of no small dimensions. We want the road badly, but anyone can see at a glance, who passes over the uncompleted portion, that it is a mammoth undertaking, and will at least take many months with all tha working force that can with profit work, to put the road in a condition for travel. Still, with work commenced at both ends and vigorously prosecuted, a year hence may witness its completion.

Lompoc Record. Dry Year Notes. The cattle on the San Julian are being disposed of as fast as buyers can find means of transportation. Tbe feed there is the best in the south, and quite a herd of cattle and many thou sands of sheep will be tided over, but to make sure that those they keep do not suffer, the surplus stock will be sold off at once. This is a wise con elusion.

From all indications Guadalupe lakes will prove the salvation of the lower portion of the Santa Maria val ley. News comes that the great cen trifugal pnmp is called into requisition to lift their waters to the valley, with a fine prospect of getting sufficient on the land to insure cropping several thousand acres. The sugar factory company have to resort to this resource for moisture with which to produce beets the present year and to lie able to start the new factory at all in '98. The mistake has been that the people, like our own, did not realize the necessity for irrigation and set themselves to work several months ago, when a far greater area could have been brought under profitable cultivation. The years to come will find this experience very valuable and it will be a very good year for rainfall to make the farmers believe irrigation not necessary.

The only trouble at present is fuel, but that will be remedied when the gap is completed and we can procure crude petroleum at one half what it costs to steam up with wood. These lakes, it is claimed, will afford sufficient water with which to irrigate 20,000 acres. Lompoc Record. WILL RAISE SOME CROPS. HART HOUSE LIVERY STABLES BL0SSER BROWN, Proprietors.

While Some Have Attribnted the Disaster to a Spanish Spy, The Well-Informed Totally Discredit the idea. Bv The Associated Trei? Santa Cruz, April 26. Three explosions about 5:15 this afternoon at the California Powder Works caused a greater loss of life than any of the previous accidents in the history of these works. The wildest rumors are prevalent regarding the number killed and iujured. The exact number however cannot be ascertained before morning.

It is known that seven were killed and four seriously injured. As nearly as can be learned the primary cause of the disaster was the explosion of the gun cotton plant. No doubt is entertained among the officials of the works that the explosion was due to accident. Extraordinary precautions had been taken to prevent treachery and no well-informed man entPrtnins the opinion that the e.ploMon was the work of a Spanish spy, us was at first suggested. It is not thought that the explosion will interfere with the manufacture of smokeless powder for the government.

None ot the plants used in making powder for the fulfillment of the government contracts are injured. TO DEFEND THE COAST. The 'Patrol Fleet Is Ready For The Service. By The As.ociatert Press San Francisco, Apr. 25.

The first news of it was published in the Press yesterday morning, and before night more applicants than could be accommodated were on hand.

The Santa Barbara merchants with accustomed liberality came to the rescue by offering to equip about fifty men with arms, ammunition, etc. The transcript of testimony in the coroners inquest as to the death of Pauline Martinez, at Los Alamos, has been filed with County Clerk Doyle. The testimony shows that Mrs. Martinez died without medical attendance. She had been living for several years with a Mr.

Brown, who could give no information as to the nature of the illness. The jury found that acute phthisis was the cause of death, upon the testimony of Dr. J. Will Graham. The inquest was held before L.

Commercial Agent Frye of the Southern Pacific reports that a special freight train of 26 cars left Saticoy Sunday for Chicago; thirty cars left Santa Barbara yesterday, and twenty-eight cars go from Ellwood on the 28th. There will also be several trains from Saticoy this week. A big fire in the San Roqui canon yesterday clouded the sky with 'smoke. These mountain fires, usually the result of carelessness, are doing great damage by destroying what little feed remains, and should be closely guarded against.

Sailor Dick Jenkins demonstrated his agility by climbing to the top of the flag pole at the court house grounds yesterday morning, and put ting in new halyards for the flag. The mast is over 60 feet high, but Dick would have made it had it been 100, To join the Home Guards will not prevent the volunteers going into the regular troops later if they desire, and the training obtained will serve them to good advantage. If you have not already handed in your name do so at the company drills held tonight or tomorrow night at Armory Hall, or Friday night at Channel City Hall. Councilman Smith, a member of the tunnel and water system committee, reported yesterday that the pipe line from the tunnel to the reservoir was completed, and that water would be turned in diiect from the tunnel last evening. He said that Saturday there were 600,000 gallons of water in the reservoir, which has capacity for 1,600,000 gallons.

Frank Ruiz appeared before Justice Crane yesterday for arraignment on the charge of crime against nature, and his examination was set for next Wednesday at 10 oclock. It is understood that Ruiz is ready to plead guilty, and he will probably see the inside of states prison before long. He is about twenty-five years old. The arrest was made by Officer James Tryee. A delivery horse of Edwards ran away yesterday afternoon, starting from the Ortega street entrance to the yard.

The wagon was loaded with pipe, which crowded forward on to the horse, and frightened him more than ever. A man named Libby caught a line just as the horse turned down Chapala street, and succeeded in stopping the runaway, after being dragged about 100 feet. Hon. WHALEY, Santa Marie She Knew the Town. Judge Nathan Goff of West Virginia has a sister famous all through the state for her remarkable brilliancy of mind and broad culture. Miss Goff possesses that rare quality of being able to appre date a joke at her own expense. Tbe family home of the Goffs is in Clarksburg, a straggling city in the mountains of West Virginia not especially noted for anything except its muddy streets in winter. Miss Goff is a frequent visitor to New York, and on one occasion she attended a reception at tbe house of a prominent bishop, given in honor of a clergyman who had recently accepted a charge in New York.

It fell to Miss Goffs lot to entertain another equally prominent bishop whose diocese is one of the New England states and who grew entbusi-astio in talking about the guest of honor. He dilated at length on his learning and oratory and dosed his enlogium by saying "And you know. Miss Goff, the most remarkable thing about our friend is that he comes from a miserable little mndhole in West Virginia. Let me see. It is called and the bishop hesitated, trying to recall tbe place "it is some place with a the bishop finally added.

"Oh, yes, said Miss Goff Clarksburg! I live in that mudhole. Cincinnati Commercial Tribune. Th Greatest of These. A genuine case of love of one little girl for another still smaller was seen on tbe east side a few days ago. A number of little girls were dancing gracefully and joyously in the street to the music of a hand organ played by an Italian.

A reporter, who had listened and looked for some time with pleasure, called one girl to him, gave her a nickel and told her to give it to the musician. She sprang away joyfully to do it, but paused suddenly, hesitated and ran off to another girl, pathetic looking and weak. To this little thing she gave the 5 cent piece, resigning to another the pleasure of rewarding the organ grinder for the fun they were having. The tot ran up to him with the rosiest smile she had worn for a week and said, Derel New York Commerial Advertiser. The Planets.

Professor James E. Keeler of the Alleghany observatory, in a lecture de dared that he did not believe that any of the suns satellites, except the earth, are inhabited, although there is a remote possibility in the cases of Venus and Mara He said: "Nothing can be seen on tbe surface of Mercury and only vague markings on the surface of enua Of Venus we know nothing, except that it has a dense atmosphero. In the case of Mars the evidence is not yet sufficient. We may suppose that in time the larger planets will be fitted for supporting life as the earth is now." The Farmer la the Lighthouse. A farmer had secured an appointment as lightkeeper in a Maine coast lighthouse.

Tbe first night he went on duty he lighted np promptly at dusk and at 11 oclock carefully extinguished the lamp. The next day, oourse, there was trouble, and when he was taken to task he replied that he supposed 10 oclock was late enough to keep the light going, as he thought that all honest men shonld be in bed at that hoar. Boston Herald. Asking For Whet Be Wanted. Two little tots of Hudson were kneeling at their mothers knee Baying tbe Lords Prayer.

The oldest one was repeating it after his mother, and when he reached the passage that reads, "Give us this day our daily bread, what was the mothers astonishment when the little tot exclaimed, "Hit him for a pie, Johnnie hit him for a pie." Cleveland Leader. In Postal Positions. The new woman is very much in evidence in Uncle Sams offices, for in the postoffices she prevails to the extent of 7,670, and in the variousviepartmenta the postal service at Washington and throughout the country tbe oath of office has been administered to over 80,000 women to qualify them for service in handling, distributing or otherwise dealing with the mails. Repairing J' HERE AND THERE. 1 It is the season now to go About the country high and low Among the lilacs hand in hand And two by two in fairyland. The brooding boy, the sighing maid. Wholly fam and half afraid. Do meet along the hazeled brook To pass and linger, pause and look.

A year ago and, blithe paired. Their rough and tumble play they shared; They kissed and quarreled, laughed and cried, A year ago at Eastertide. Her whom with rude, uplifted hand Be did bethreaten or command, Bcr in a somewhat longer dress. He now would tremble to caress. Now by the stile ablaze she stops.

And his demurer eyes he drops. Now they exchange averted sighs Or stand and marry silent eyes. And he to her a hero is. And sweeter she than primroses, Their common silence dearer far Than nightingale and mar vis are. Now when they sever wedded hands Joy trembles in their bosom strands.

And lovely laughter leaps and falls Upon their lips in madrigals. Facts and Fiction. Want of Tact. Never say too much. Manners go groat way, and delicate matters managed with tact can be carried out without the slightest blow to the sensitive feelings of the parties concerned.

It is not tact to rush up to a person and say, "How ill yon are looking. Any one who is not feeling well generally knows all about it and does not like to be reminded of the fact. On the contrary, in meeting anybody who is looking particularly well or handsome, then is the time to speak. To be able to keep people in good humor and never rub them the wrong way shows a wonderful amount of tact, but how many people there are who are always doing or saying the wrong thing. Two old school friends who had not seen each other in years met again a short time ago, and almost immediately after the first words of greeting had been exchanged, the one exclaimed to the other, Why, you look as if you had been crying for years; your faceis so writokled.

Now that remark, to say the least, did not show tact, and in a measure it destroyed the old feeling of affection which had existed for so many years. People do not like to be told disagreeable facts, but when an unpleasant truth must be told, to use a little tact in the telling of it will make the hurt less deep. Say and do pleasant things in this world whenever it is possible, but if disagreeable ones come to the surface handle them as gently as possible to spare the feelings of others. Detroit Free Press. Be Natural.

If a woman cannot secure a young man for a life mate by being herself, living her natural life, she would be far better off to remain single to the end of her days. Tbe cloak of deception universally worn by young women as well as young men during oonrtship cannot be continued through married life when together. The strain wonld be too great and the mask must and is thrown off and trouble begins. Each one finds that the other is not what he or she seemed to be.
