Yankee Stan Bahnsen Voted AL'sTop Rookie NEW YORK (UPI) Stan Bahnsen was late arriving last March but he wound up at the head of the class in November. Bahnsen, who didnt report to the New York Yankee camp until March 17 because of bis military service and was afraid he would be sent to the minors, Tuesday was named the American League rookie of the year. Bahnsen, who posted a 17-12 record with a 2.06 ERA, received 17 of the 20 votes in the balloting by the Baseball Writers Association, of America. There were two voters in each of the 10 league cities. Washingtons fine defensive centerfielder Del Unser received the other three ballots.

I was jreally worried about making the team, Bahnsen said, but Ralph (Houk) -told me when I arrived that he had Kelly Leads a place for me on the roster if I could throw strikes. That always was my problem. Houk, the Yankee manager, said, He richly deserves the honor and he owes it all to himself. Ive never seen a player in better shape when he reported. He came down here with the one idea in mind of being a starting pitcher.

If more players had that attitude, theyd be better off. Houk admitted he expected Bahnsen, a 23-year-old righthander who was the Yanks fourth selection in the 1965 free agent draft, to be a starting pitcher in 1967. But he couldnt get the ball over the plate and was farmed out to Syracuse where he posted a 9-11 mark with a 3.52 ERA. Things were different in 1968. He started the Yanks fifth game against California and won it with relief help from Joe Verbanic in the ninth.
