UPI Telephoto LOS ANGELES (UPI) -The Los Angeles Lakers head for Baltimore today and the third and fourth games of their best of seven playoff finals for the National Basketball Association Western Division title, hoping for at least a split on the alien court. Otherwise were back where we started.

The next game was scheduled Wednesday night with the fourth tilt of the series Friday night. Schaus had high praise for Jerry Wests 52 point performance last night: 'He's one of the greatest athletes Ive ever seen. The coach also was pleased with the performance of Don Nelson, who was pressed into service as a replacement for Elgin Baylor, out of the playoffs with an Injured kneecap. He accomplished these feats while affiliated with the San Francisco Olympic Club and the U.S.

Navy after graduating from Fresno State in 1938. Wamerdam joined the Fresno State coaching staff as an assistant track coach in 1947 and was moved up to the head job in 1961. As head coach, his teams won the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) conference title three out of four years. The 1964 team was the NCAA College Division champion and finished third with USC and California in the NCAA University Division meet. About 30 Hancock track team members will be honored at the banquet.

Bruce Howard, who posted a miniscule 2.20 era at Indianapolis last year and then allowed 0.82 runs per game in three starts with the Chisox at the end of the season, already has won a starting berth, while towering Dave Debus s-chere, the player-coach of the National Basketball Association's Detroit ons, feels he deserves one, too. RALEIQH SQUARES HAVE THE BEATI Bobby Locker, who won more games than either Howard or Debusschere in 1964 (16) and isnt even on the Chicago roster. Locker made Lopez task that much more difficult Monday when he twirled three hitless innings to complete Chicago's 2-0 one-hit victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. There was a pretty fair pitching duel at West Palm Beach where Milwaukee and the Los Angeles Dodgers hooked up in a scoreless battle throught 11 innings before Gene Olivers single in the 12th frame provided the Braves with a 1-0 victory. Bob Sadowski toled the first eight innings for Milwaukee, surrendering four hits, and Dan Osinski gained the decision in relief.

Claude Osteen became the first Dodger to go the nine-inning distance, giving way to Jim Brewer, who absorbed the defeat. Mel Stottlemyre and Bob Gibson, a pair of World Series stars for the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals, respectively, traded serves at Fort Lauderdale and this time the Yanks came out on top when Phil Linz slugged a three-run homer in the second for all New Yorks runs in 3-2 decision. Minnesota shortstop Zoilo Versalles was yanked in the middle of an exhibition game with the Mets and fined $300 for failure to give an all-out effort after which the Twins suffered an embarrassing 8-1 loss to New York. Versalles protested to Minny manager Sam Mele, which precipitated the fine, but the rest of the Twins offered little resistance to the Mets, Elsewhere, Ernie Banks blasted his fifth home run of the spring to offset a two-run blow by San ranc-iscos Willie Maysandlead the Chicago Cubs to a 7-6 victory over the Giants Jackie Warner drove in all four runs with a homer, sacrifice fly and a double as the Los Angeles Angels whipped the Cleveland Indians 4-1 And the Houston Astros, playing without big Walt Bond whc was struck in the head in the first inning and taken to the hospital for X-rays, scored three rims In the eighth inning to beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3.

Donn Clendonen andWii-lie Stargell blasted home runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates teed off on Jim Maloney far seven hits and six runs in five innings en route to a 7-3 rout of the Cincinnati Reds Don Lock crashed his sixth circuit of the spring with two men on base and the Washington Senators scored a pair of unearned runs in the seventh frame to defeat the Baltimore Orioles 6-4 look as Stuart successor the infield is a proven combination. Eddie Bressoud, who had his finest major league season last year when he batted .293 and raised his fielding average by 16 points, is back at shortstop. Frank Malzone, entering ninth sesTson ah a Red Sox regular, will start at third. Second base is surrounded by prospects but the call probably will go to the veteran Felix Mantillla, who hit a surprising 30 home runs last year. In addition to southpaw Bennett, the pitching staff features such right-handed starters as Bill Mon-bouquette had a good finish after a poor start last year.

Morehead owns one of the finest curves in the league and Herman looks to the pitcher to improve his control this time. The real star rf the hurling staff is enormous Dick Radatz, the games ace relief specialist. Radatz returns from a 1964 season in which he posted a 16-9 mark, 25 saves and a 2.29 earned run average with his awesome fast ball. He probably will be joined in the bullpen by Jack Lamabe (9-13), who was used as a starter last year but did not show the form he enjoyed as a middleman in 1963. Veterans Bob Tillman and Russ Nixon are expected to split the catching.

Tillman batted .278 last season; a rise of 53 percentage 'points which earned him the clubs most improved player of the year award. Now Herman looks for the club to improve as a unit. "The race could be be- tween New York, Baltimore and Chicago, Billy said. After that anybody could be In there from fourth place on down, and we Intend to be up there among them. ers than most people think, Herman says.

"But a team can come by a second division attitude pretty easily after being down there four or five times in a row. We plan to keep talking and build up conficence. He basically has a group of established pros to work with, aside from outfielder Tony Conigliaro, who smashed 24 home runs last year and batted .290 as a raw rookie from the New York Pennsylvania League. Gone, in the Soxs lone major deal of the winter, is first baseman Dick Stuart. He was traded to Philadelphia Phillies for pitcher Dennis Bennett.

The Red Sox thus gave up a power hitter who drove in 114 runs last year for a left-hander who has be bothered by arm trouh Bennett had a 12-14 mark with the contending Phils in 1964. Right now, Herman thinks in terms of a starting outfield that would put Carl Yastrzemski back in left, Gary Geiger in center and the very confident Conigliaro in right. Yastrzemski, who won the American League batting title in 1963, dropped to .289 last year after being shifted to center. His best fielding was done in left.
