Santa Maria Times Sunday, May 28, 2017 E5 Philip B.Verdin ose "Pepe" Rojas Norman Hallin Master Mechanic Philip B. Verdin, 73, Brother, Uncle, Friend, and Godfather to many, was the first born of five sons to Virginio and Josefina Verdin on March 22, 1944 in Santa Maria. He passed away on May 20, 2017 at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. Long time Nipomo resident Norm Hallin passed away at Marian Hospital in Santa Maria, CA on May 17, 2017. The son of parents who immigrated to the United States from Sweden, Norm was born on June 14, 1920 and raised in Los Angeles, CA.

He graduated from Belmont High School WWW 1949-2017 Jose "Pepe" Rojas, of Santa Maria, California, passed away on May 18th, 2017, after a long battle with cancer. Jose was born in San Jose de Gracia, Michoacan, in 1949. He moved to Los Angeles, California in 1969, where he eventually met his wife and welcomed his two daughters. Jose was a loving father, son, brother, husband and brother-in-law. He had a and subsequently attended UCLA.

In 1940 Phil, as he was known to most of his close friends, graduated from Santa Maria High he married his one true love, Mary Smith, whom he had actually known since junior high school. It was a marriage that was to endure for over 53 years. Their first child, a passion for music, taking any and every opportunity to share his talent with the world. He loved soccer, frisbee golf, driving and traveling with his family. Jose is survived by his wife, Maria, and two daughters, Tanya and Alejandra.

He will live forever in their hearts. Services will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Los Alamos, California, on Saturday, May 27th, 2017, at 2 P.M.. He was one of Mr. Wray's favorite students in auto technology class at Santa Maria High where he learned how to use specialized tools and also became a good welder. Soon after graduation, he co-owned and operated an auto repair business; Hap Phil's Union 76 gas station at the corner of Blosser and Main in Santa Maria. He went on to become a Certified Master Automotive Technician and worked at various auto dealerships in Santa Maria and Lompoc.

His last job was with Toyota of Santa Maria where he worked for over 35 years until his failing health caused him to take an early retirement. During his prime years, he was involved with stock car racing. He owned and was the lead mechanic of two mini-stock Toyota race cars, traveling with his team around the state competing in the oval dirt track circuit, including the Santa Maria Speedway, Bakersfield, and Newhall Race Tracks. Phil was an avid bowler. He competed as an amateur pro bowler with the American Bowling Congress League.

He traveled the country in his RV to bowling tournaments and championship events in New York, Memphis, Las Vegas, Reno, and other regional areas. One of his accomplishments as an amateur bowler was to have bowled a perfect 300 at least twice. During breaks from bowling he liked to go fishing and boating, especially at Lopez Lake. Phil was a life -long devout Catholic and served as an alternate Board Member for the Cross of Peace Project in Santa Maria. He was probably well known during his younger years as one of the "Verdin boys." He would go around the then, small town of Santa Maria, pushing a trailer by hand with his four brothers to go work on his parent's rental properties and dirt lots around town where his father harvested the jicama crops for commercial sale.

This molded him to become an experienced handyman and a long-time landlord that kept him rather busy. Philip was preceded in death by his parents, Virginio Verdin and Josefina Verdin, brothers; Joe Verdin, John Verdin, Joel Verdin, Ciro Verdin, Delano Verdin, and Joey Verdin. Sisters; Josefina Varela, Mercedes Avila, and Virginia Armenta. He is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law; Jesse (Amy) Verdin, Simon (Lupe) Verdin, and sister and brother-in-law; Judy (Baldemar) Galvan. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 31 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary, with the rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 1 at St.

Mary's of Assumption Catholic Church. Burial will follow immediately at the Santa Maria Cemetery. Norm's father was a contractor who was a great believer education. With his father's influence, Norm chose to major in civil engineering, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1942 from the University of Southern California.

Part of the "greatest Norm was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy after graduating from college and served as the navigator and radar officer aboard a live ammunition ship in the Pacific theater from 1944 through 1946. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Lieutenant after service during World War II. After naval service, he went to work for the California Division of Highways Bridge Department where he rose to be Senior Bridge Engineer, designing and working on many of the bridges still in existence on the Southern California freeway system. After relocating to Ojai, California, Norm along with Don Bleak founded Buena Engineers Inc. in 1959.

Based in Ventura, he guided this fledgling startup business through growth that would come to include multiple field offices throughout California from San Luis Obispo to Palm Springs. In 1963 the Hallin family relocated to Carpinteria which would be called home for the next 23 years. Norm was active in the Carpinteria Community Church and was an avid fan and supporter of Carpinteria High School athletic programs. Upon retirement, Norm and Mary relocated to Nipomo, CA where his next passion in life, golf, took over. Norm spent many days playing the course at Black Lake and made many friends over the years on the links.

He was able to continue playing past the age of 90 and achieved the distinction of shooting his age during one round, as well as a making a "hole in one" on a couple of occasions. Family was very important to Norm. He always enjoyed having his children, grandchildren, and more recently great grandchildren around him. He followed his granddaughters to New York City to watch them march in the Macy's Parade and followed his grandson to Kalamazoo, Michigan to watch him play soccer. He rarely missed an event his grandkids participated in over the years and was a shining light to everyone in the Hallin clan.

Norm is survived by his daughter Andrea Mather, and sons Rod Hallin (Wendy) and Doug Hallin (Laura)). He is also survived by granddaughter Connie Mather, and grandsons Eric, Stuart and Cameron Hallin, as well as two great grandchildren, Jacob and Emma Hallin. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his eldest son Brian and his granddaughter Jennifer. A private family ceremony is planned and internment will take place at Carpinteria Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Norm's memory may be made to the Special Olympics Southern California, 1600 Forbes Way 200, Long Beach, CA 90810.

January 24 1925 to May 06 2017 Margaret passed away Saturday May 06 2017 from natural causes. She was born in Morrilton Arkansas to James Marion Stallings and Iva Stallings. She was raised in a house without plumbing or electricity. Her primary education was in a two room schoolhouse. She graduated from Morrilton High School in 1943.

After graduation Margaret moved to Little Rock AR with her siblings. There she met the love of her life widowed mother and were married in 1946 and moved to Santa James Jarvis. They Maria in 1948. In 1952 their only son, James Jr. was born.

Margaret started her long career in real estate working for a title insurance company, eventually retiring from her own company Jarvis Real Estate. Margaret was an active person with many interests: she enjoyed outdoor pursuits such as camping, boating, photographing wildflowers, and just a simple afternoon drive. She raised orchids and African violets. She played cards and especially liked her bridge group. Margaret was an outstanding cook, known for her fabulous desserts.

Margaret loved to travel, whether in the R.V. or flying over the Ocean. She was amazed that a little girl from rural Arkansas could grow up and visit the Great Wall of China and the Parthenon in Greece. Margaret is preceded in death by her father James Marion Stallings, her mother Iva McClung, her stepfather Wiley McClung, her sister Evelyn Obrien, and brothers James Stallings and Gustave Stallings. Colonel Erland "Earl" Gotfred Matson Patricia Ann Condon 1937 -2017 Ret. Colonel Erland "Earl" Gotfred Matson, 79, resident of Orcutt, California, passed away surrounded by the love of his family on Thursday, May 18th, at the Marian Extended Care Center in Santa Maria. Patricia Ann Condon, 71 of Santa Maria CA, passed away in her home surrounded by family on May 19th, 2017. Born in Toronto, Canada on May 18, 1946, she moved with her family to the United States in 1975. Patricia was preceded in death by the love of her life Larry Irwin Condon, beloved granddaughter Brittany Lynn Allen and her siblings Larry Dow, Jane Andrews, David Lockwood and Marlene Gilmour.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Mary Jarvis, and grandchildren Ben, Alice and Sam Jarvis. The family will hold a memorial service for Margaret on May 23,2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Heritage Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 4799 S. Bradley Santa Maria, with a reception to follow. Virginia will long be remembered for her independent thinking, strength of character, sense of humor, and love of life. There was always room for one more at her table, not only because of her great cooking, but also for her joy to be surrounded by family sisters whom he adored. Earl graduated from St. Patrick High School in 1956 and began his education in nursing then joined the U.S. Army in 1966 where he served our country for 23 years as a CRNA and earned the rank of Colonel.

Earl completed two tours of duty in Vietnam and earned a Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service and Campaign Medal, and many other commendation medals and ribbons. Earl is survived by his wife Rosemarie, daughters Kirsten (Jason) Cahoon of Santa Maria, CA and Daniela Matson (Chris Nowers) of Beaconsfield, England, sisters Fran (Bill) Hancock of Sacramento, CA, Judy Grantham of Chandler, AZ and Shirley Mead of Wyandotte, MI and many loving grandchildren, foster children, nieces, nephews and extended family. Earl was, and continues to be, loved by many. The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30th in the Chapel of Magner-Maloney Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31st at St Louis De Montfort Church in Orcutt. A reception will follow with location to be announced. Earl will be laid to rest at the Santa Maria Cemetery in Santa Maria, CA on Friday, June 2nd at 1:00 P.M. Arrangements are in the care of Magner-Maloney Funeral Home and Crematory.

Mom always had a way of being a straight shooter, telling you what you needed to hear, but always with unending love. Her wit and liveliness always brightened the room everywhere she was. Patricia worked in the health care industry, retiring after many years from Marian Hospital. Mom was the one who always took on the caregiving role during our family's hardest times. She took on the responsibility of the heaviest burdens with courage, strength and dignity.

They built a number of homes for their family in the San Fernando Valley and Lake Arrowhead, eventually settling at "the their beloved home In Solvang. Virginia was always active and athletic. She was a champion water skier, showed Welsh Ponies, and was a member of both the Santa Ynez Valley Hunt Club and the Sage Hens.

Many friends will remember her for the delicious homemade jams that she made in vast quantities, a tradition that she lovingly passed on to her great-granddaughter. This truly expresses the wonderful spirit and generous nature that we will all remember her for. She was preceded in death by her husband Eric Roderick Erickson. Richard was born in San Francisco on July 28, 1929 and grew up in Redwood City and Sacramento. Richard graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in civil engineering in 1951 and a master's degree in 1952. Richard served in the US Navy during the Korean War and retired after reaching the rank of Captain (Reserve). Richard worked as an engineer at Caltrans, retiring in 1991 as deputy director for Caltrans Region 5 (San Luis Obispo), Rachel Davison Born Dec. 6, 1958.

Passed away on May 13, 2017 with her loving husband, children and grandchildren by her side. 1921 2017 Rachel was a wonderful Mother, Sister, Grandmother and friend to everyone. She especially loved the old time gatherings with the family. Rachel was employed by Marian Medical Center in the Housekeeping Department for 17 years. After retiring she enjoyed quilting, reading the Paris, Arkansas Newspaper, word searches, crossword puzzles and playing Bingo.

She was also a wealth of knowledge in Politics 1 ill Her joys of life were her grandchildren and travelling with her husband. She will be very much missed and forever in our hearts. She is survived by her husband, David directing highway construction and maintenance from Big Sur to Santa Barbara. He lived in San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria with his wife Diane, who preceded him in death after 36 years of marriage in 1988 and his wife Sandra for the last 27 years. He enjoyed traveling with Sandra throughout the world after their retirement.

He was an avid reader about history, including American Californian and railroad history, and had a detailed knowledge of WWII. In addition to Sandra, Richard is survived by his brother, Robert Elliott, daughters, Catherine Elliott, Susan Smith, Karen Smith and Patricia Baer; grandchildren, Celeste, Cody, Emily and Madeline Smith; and stepchildren, Regina Smith, Marty Carlson and Lorreen Malone. O'Dwyer, her two daughters, Crystal Marquez and Jessica Hernandez, her two sons, Jesus and Jimmy Hernandez, her Per his request, there will be no services. nt grandchildren, Tony and Destiny Tumamao, Nicholas Porraz, Robert Parra and great granddaughers Kaile and Cali Hernandez, and sisters Rita Cardenaz and Shirley Mendoza. May she rest in peace. Graveside memorial will take place at Lompoc Cemetery on Friday May 26th at 10:00 in the morning. There will be a celebration of life following immediately after at Waller Park in Santa Maria. and what was happening in the world at all times. Rachel was a very generous and giving soul and she will be greatly missed by all.

Rachel was preceded in death by her Son, Roger (O'Neal) Davison; Parents, Bethel and May Jordan; Siblings, Aneita Man and Don Jordan. She is survived by her Daughter, Connie Brown; Sons, Danny (Cynthia) Davison, Larry (Joyce) Davison, Mike (Cathy) Davison and Gene (Suzie) Davison; Siblings, Mabel Serpa, Dorothy Rhinehart and Thurman Jordan, as well as 11 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren, 4 Great-Great Grandchildren and several Nieces and Nephews. A Visitation for Rachel will take place from 10:00 11:00 A.M. at Orcutt Christian Church (204 Patterson Road), on Friday, May 26th, 2017, with her Funeral Service beginning at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Santa Maria Cemetery.
