BY TOM ARMSTRONG Don Melby BUY A BIT OF SPRING Own an emerald and you own a gemstone unlike any other. A lush green, emerald is more resttul than a nap in a shady green meadow, more serene than branches of the willow watted in the wind.

Each natural emerald has its own beauty marks, areas called inclusions which were developed as the emerald (orrfied. Some of the finest emeralds from Columbia have a special kind of inclusion, a three-phase inclusion, which contains a liquid, a solid crystal, and a gas. Some inclusions are visible to the eye and lend a personalizing beauty to the gem. One way the gemologists on our staff tell the difference between a natural emerald and a synthetic one is by the appearance of such inclusions under magnification. The emerald has been a valued gemstone in many cultures.

In South America, the Incas refused to reveal their mining source even under threat of death. The crown jewels of Iran featured many emeralds, including an emerald belt, which was used to support the value of the currency. But the real value of an emerald is the pleasure you have in wearing it. Come rest your eyes on the beautiful green emeralds we have. When you buy the color of spring, you haVe the emerald to enjoy all year long.
