They believe the victim of the 12:09 a.m crash on northbound Highway 101 just north of Clark Avenue to be a 38-year-old man from Duarte, but need to refer to dental charts before a positive identification can be made. Funeral services for the victim are set in Monrovia at a later date. CHP officials believe the driver fell asleep at the wheel only 30 miles from his destination of Arroyo Grande. The three-axle truck and tanker trailer, operated by Cox Petroleum of Bakersfield, was carrying 9,000 gallons of high-octane gasoline loaded at Southgate.

Only about 600 gallons of gasoline was recovered, after Santa Barbara County Fire forces extinguished the flames. However, more of the gas soaked into the dirt at the roadside, where an environmental cleanup continued Monday. Another horrible accident's investigation is nearing to a close. A small amount of methamphetamine and marijuana was discovered in a vehicle driven by Ryan Stever, 34, of Halcyon, after he collided with Earl Townsend 55, of Bakersfield, on Highway 166 just east of Alisos Canyon Road Wednesday. Both drivers were killed, but Townsend's wife, Pam, 53, survived with only minor injuries.

A toxicology report is still pending on both victims. Authorities are still try ing to determine why a speeding 1979 Pontiac crashed into a tree between northbound Highway 101 and the IXmovan Road offramp Sunday. The driver of the vehicle, Sarah Ann Hernandez. 17.

of Santa Maria was apparently heading to the beach when her car changed lanes and left the highway to the right, hitting a tree at an estimated 70 mph at 7 40 p.m. The vehicle was wrapped around the tree. She lost one leg in the accident and severely fractured the other. She is in critical condition at Valley Community Hospital's intensive care unit. Her 1 -year-old son Angel Hernandez Toche escaped without injury thanks to a child restraining seat.

The other occupants were not so lucky. Passenger Beatrice Barrientos, 14, of 'Guadalupe, who was sitting beside Hernandez in the front, died instantly when her skull was fractured. She leaves behind a 3-month-old daughter, and funeral services are pending at Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary. Beatrice's brothers Miguel Barrientos, 16, and Robert Barrientos, 11, both of Guadalupe, as well as family friend Arturo Palomar 14, of Santa Maria, each received broken bones in the accident, but are reported in fair condition at Marian Medical Center.
