Thru ou. aw Zoo fires man in bear deaths EUREKA (AP) Ben Adan, the embattled city parks and recreation director who ordered the killing of two popular zoo bears, has been relieved of his authority of the zoo, says Mayor Fred Moore. The mayor said Monday, however, that Adan would remain a city employee, probably as director of the parks department.

Meanwhile, the Eureka City Council has imposed a moratorium on the killing of any other animals until the newly created position of zoo supervisor is filled, Moore said. Adan received harsh criticism following his decision to order lethal injections for Mama and Papa Bear rather than find them temporary lodging while their grotto was being rebuilt. Adan, who had worked 21 years with the animals at the small zoo, faced a problem when construction of the bear grotto was scheduled to begin and he had no place to house the animals. His solution was to kill the adult bears and ship their two cubs to a baby animal exhibit in Oregon.
