Walker Tucker, 39, farm laborer, Santa Maria disturbing Garage Plan Rejected by City Council Rejection of a setback ordinance for garages by city council last night got the problem off the boards agenda, blit councilman V. L. Pollard pointed out that the door wasnt completely closed if more valid reasons for such an ordinance arise. Councilman Leonard S. Petersen, who has expressed his disapproval of the ordinance from the time it was first advanced by the City Planning commission, moved for its rejection.

He was seconded by Pollard. Pollard observed that so far as he could see the only valid reason for the setback ordinance was to prevent blocking of alleys by cars parked outside garages. The city planners proposed a garage setback of 22 feet from the center of the alleys. CpI. Harper Home on Leave for 30 Days Cpl.

Two Injured in Single-Car Crash A single car traffic accident 12 miles south of Santa Maria on Highway 101 at 6:51 a.m. today resulted in injury to two persons. Suffering cuts on the forehead were Bobby G. Lower, Ventura, and Mary Ellen Diernier, Casita Springs, according to California Highway Patrol reports. Both were taken to Sisters hospital by a passing motorist for treatment by attending physician Albert M.

Beekler. They were scheduled to be released today. Delay Seen in Building Start Inference that delays may hold up plans for the 195-residence Mobilhome subdivision in southeast Santa Maria along Stowell road was made in city council session last night. A City Planning commission recommendation that the board begin consideration of extension of Caminq Colegio, one of the principal east-west streets thru the proposed on ta Nance road for drainage reasons was referred back to the planners for further study. C.

ty. Ford, city planning head, made the recommendation that Camino Colegio should be made a continuous street from Broadway to Nance in view of surface waters which would have to be handled thru the new subdivision. Councilman Curt Tunnell observed, Its pretty early to pass a resolution of intention for extension of that street now. Mayor Glenn Seaman agreed, Especially since the situation is now up in the air. You mean fluid? asked Tunnell.

Mayor Seaman laugher, Very much so. A tentative subdivision map for the Mobilhomes and subdivision lias been presented to the city planners by E. C. Johnsen and March 15 starting date for construction has been indicated. Burglar Gets $65 in Break-In at SM Home Burglary of $65 cash was reported to city police last night by Hank Neiggemarin, member of The Times advertising staff and resident at 204 South Elizabeth.

Neiggemann reported1 the break-in and theft at 9:14 p.m. yesterday and said his home had been broken into while he and his wife were away. Nothing else was missing or appeared disturbed, Neiggemann reported, except the drawer in which the money was located. County (Continued from Page in April, 1951, also for $15. Considered fixing salaries of judges of county justice courts.

All these judges must run for re-election for a six-year term because of consolidation of city and justice courts in Santa Maria, Guadalupe and Lompoc. As a result, salaries must be adjusted, Smith said, and since there is a constitutional amendment that prohibits salary increases during the term of office, the board must make adjustments now. Judge Morris Stephan of Santa Maria appeared before the board in behalf of the Justices, Marshals and Constables Assn, of Santa Barbara county, and requested that the board adopt the Fresno plan, which provides for salaries based on the case load of each respective court to permit increases during the term of office if rise of case loads so justified it. Discussed with representatives of the State Division of Beaches and Parks the future acquisition of for beach parks and probable replacement of a county bridge at Carpinteria beach park, washed out during January floods. The board decided to get an appraisal of an 11-acre subdivision adjacent to the bridge and park with a view to purchasing the land, thus eliminating need for an expensive bridge to serve the subdivision.

An appraisal on El Capitan beach, about 40 miles south of Santa Maria near Refugio beach, was also called for, with a view to purchasing 100 acres for trailer and camping facilities for tourists. The area is now being operated as a com mercial enterprise. Representing the state division were Col. Edwin C. Kelton, Jess Chaffee and L.

C. Ewen. Colonel Kelton advised the board that because of the expected increase in population in California, the county should not postpone acquisition of beach properties because of the expected increase in price of these properties. Homeless (Continued from Page 1) SO, reported she was able to place Illinois families in a trailer, one house, a small two-room apartment and in two rooms with cooking- privileges. Mrs.

Myrna Hulett, housing expediter for the chamber, placed families in. two one-bedroom unfurnished houses and had two rooms on her list of available units. Both women admitted they were down to the bottom of the barrel, particularly where servicemen with from two to four children were concerned. Rooms and some apartments were still being found in Pismo Beach and Shell Beach, but thp servicemen and their wives were warned that summer rates would soon go into effect boosting rents out of all proportion to what enlisted men in the Army can afford. One servicemans wife seeking assistance at the Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon explained she had rented a place in Nipomo, sight unseen, for to share with another servicemans wife.

But after one night there, she reported, I know my husband wouldnt stand for me living in such a place. She had ohe child, her girl friend two. In desperation they decided to try talking a landlord with an available no children apartment into taking the three children. Another serviceman who will be stationed here this week with the 44th was seeking a place for his young wife and baby. He was told theres lots of places for rent in Santa Barbara.

Bitterly he reported, We tried 14 places last night. None of them would accept my baby. On file at the Chamber office are more than 750 requests from members of the 44th for housing units in Santa Maria. In each case, Mrs. Hulett reports, a mimeographed form letter was sent advising the serviceman of the grave shortage of rental units here.

But young wives, wives with young babies and wives expecting babies refused to heed the warning. For the past two weeks hundreds of them have been sleeping in their cars while seeking a place to live in this area. An estimated 1,200 cars containing more wives and more babies are expected here this week with the 44ths division troops arriving at Camp Cooke. Mrs. Hulett announced today that persons finding an.

unfurnished rental unit could probably obtain rented stoves, refrigerators and washing machines at reasonable rates thru the chamber office. To date, she reported, the chamber has also expedited purchase of used furniture by service families, including a stove, refrigerator, couch and dinette set This would be cheaper, she advised, than shipping furniture from Illinois.
