Monday, June 24, 2002 SANTA MARIA TIMES A11 SPACE CAMP: Continued from page A-1 "The crew has to get along. They haven't figured that one out." Shouts of "lift it up" and "turn it over" came from the satellite builders in the pool as they struggled to assemble the structure. Others battled over the basics. "See how this team is working together, and this team had a breakdown in communications?" Hollister asked. Ford said the experience wrestling with plastic pipes taught her about working together as a team, and the challenges of communicating in a group event.

She said when she urged fellow teammates to put the structure down, they moved it up. "It was really hard," said Stephanie Horn, 10, of Lompoc. "It's hard to stay up and put things together at the same time." Derrin Stull, 11, of Vandenberg Air Force Base said the program taught teamwork and strength. 'Actually, it's very hard," he said. "Water gets in the tube, so it's heavy." Assembling a satellite is just one of many activities youth get to do during the summer's eight week-long sessions that include building rockets, learning about space and just having a good time.

The program which was designed by a group of engineers who work at Vandenberg Air Force Base, focuses on hands-on, mind-on learning. "It's very fun, and you build stuff. Its just been a lot of fun," added Horn, 10, of Lompoc, adding she learned about the solar system and how to put together a rocket.
