Work of Now Board Undoes the The the Old Board. The 87th District Agricultural Association will hold a fair at Lompoc next fall. That was the decision of the directors at their Los Alamos meeting some doya ago. It was tbe first meeting of the new board and one of tlieit first duties was to undo a part of what had haen doae by the old board. A $25 warrant had been drawn in favor of each of tlie old directors as remunerations for services last year.

This created a deficiency in tlie treasury funds and treasurer Goodwin refused to honor such warrants when presented for payment. One of these warrants, we are informed, after having been dishonored by the treasurer, was sold at a discount fo a Guadalupe party, but was afterwards redeemed ia gold coin. Tbe new board ordered all these warrants cancelled. Tiiis left money enough in the treasury to p.ty off all the premiums awarded on farm products, many of which had been reius-ed payment until after tlie meeting of the new board. In justice to the two retiring memliers from tiiis district, Messrs.

Tlios. Boyd and B. Pezzoni, it must be said that they refused to accept their $25 warrants when issued to them. Tlie general indignation aroused by the temporary refusal to pay premi-iuius awarded oil farm products will prove an unhealthy influence upon future fairs, several farmers having declared they would never make an other display. The oil poured on these troubled waters by the new board, in tiieir very first act, has had a palliative influence and as far as can be, makes amends for the wrongs already committed.

If they continue in like well-doing until fair time they will surely meet with success. The fair will be held at Lompoc but no date lias been announced. Tlie following is the new boaid A. Leslie, president, Los Alamos; C. Murphy, Santa Ynez; H.

Our farmers wlio have been predicting a dry year and a failure of crops have about concluded that they are not good prophets as grain is looking well the stand is good and plenty of moisture. Several parties here that have grown tired of producing, that others may consume: sowing that others may reap, under our present competitive cut-throat system, have taken the preliminary steps toward forming a cooperative colony to be located where ever the majority of members may select but will be some where on the Pacific Coast. His Advice to tho Labor Organisation Dont go Down. Some six weeks ago one of oar labor organizations passed resolutions protesting against the issuance of interest bearing government bonds, and forwarded said resolutions to our member of Congress, Cannon, wi'h an earnest appeal to tiim to do all in his power to prevent the same. Last week the secretary of the lodge received a reply from Mr. Cannon, in which be (Cannon) scores tbe members in an unmerciful and not very gentlemanly manner. Iu substance he saye: Such proceedings on the part of tbe people will ultimately break down the administration and will work great injury to the Democratic party.

It ia beyond the power of Congress to prevent the issuance of such bonds. The secretary is vested with full power and it is his duty to issue said bo ml 8. He also says, that the people have criticised Mr. Cleveland unjustly; that since tie (Cannon) has been personally acquainted with Mr. Cleveland, he finds him very submissive to his wishes and that be takes no important ntepa without first consulting him (Cannon).

Mr. Cannons advice is about this: Be mute; let your ears grow, but not your brains; be earnest and happy in that station in life in which it pleases Grover and Marion Cannon to keep you, poor miserable beings, utterly depraved, conceived In iniquity, born sin, and it is only through tlie mercy of the Dtmoci atic party that you are permitted to live at all. taken in Of 8anta If aria alley, A few Words Oa Business. Feb. 17, 1894. A new departure in oar business impels the writing of this letter. As wo know you to be identified with the great and rapidly growing dairy industry of California and the Pacific coast, an industry in which great and rapid progress has been made during the past few years, we take this means to call your attention In our Creamery Outfitting Department.

The department will be unvoted exclusively to dairy machinery and outfitting, and will he in charge and under ttm immediate supervision of an experienced and competent man, one fully conversant with the needs of the Pacific coast dairymen. In the manufacture and sale of butter, the man who would achieve success in these days must avail himself of the best and most improved modern appliances for manufacturing, as well as marketing the product. The crude hand appliances used in the past fordoing such work in a stow and uncertain manner has given way to wonderful labor and time-saving machinery, the product of human ingenuity and skill, which are beiug adapted to the increasing needs ami requirements. This need of Improved dairy machinery and appliances has been apparent to us, and after 11 careful selection of the test manufactures we believe we can offer to customers a line as nearly perfect as human skill can devise. Within the next thirty days we shall have the most complete and best line nf dairy outfitting machinery aud supplies west of Chicago.

We are pleased to announce that we have secured tlie sole agency for the Pacific coast for the world-renowned Sharpies Russian Steam Turbiue, and Belt Power Separators, the winners of first prizes at the Worlds Columbian and other Expositions, and undoubtedly tbe very best in the market. The merits of the Sharpies Separators are so well known as to scarcely require mention. Users of these machines are assured of a more uniform quality of cream aud a larger percentage of butter fat from their milk, therefore a superior quality cf butter, than by the ue of any other separator; and a complete utilization of their milk product, absolutely free frt waste. The Russian Sharpies lias no equal for a skimming station, and for creamery factory uses, not a single rival. In simplicity of construction, safety, economy and certainty of operation it stands without an equal.

We would call your particular attention to our Sharpies Imperial Russian Steam Turbine Separators in two sizes 300 to 400, and 500 to 700 lbs. tniik capacity per hour, designed especially for small or medium sized dairies, the power for which is supplied by two or three horse power boiler. These outfits are so simple in every respect Ibat any ordinary person can run them and obtain equally good results as with the larger machines. Steam from the tioilers can also be used for heating water, steaming feed, etc. Not only have we the best Separators that money can buy, but all other machinery, engines, boilers, vats, churns, butter workers and supplies, handled by us will be of the same high grade and quality.

Another of our exclusive agencies is for the Standard Elgin Hand-Made White Ash Butter Tub manufactured by the Elgin Butter Tub. Co. Elgin, 111 the only tub in the market constructed without the use of glue. Rutter packed in these tubs will be absolutely secure against taints so common in tubs of other and less skillful maunfacture. We are prepared to supply plans, specifications and estimates for all kinds and sizes of creameries, or creameries aud cheese factories combined; are also prepared to erect and equip such plants, buildings and out fittings complete, or where dairymen desire to erect their own buildings, we will furnish them plans and specifications for so doing maxing a contract with them for the oatfitting only.

Any woik that we contract for will be done tinder the supervision of ex perieuced and competent men who will see that all work, machinery, are properly Bet up and in perfect working older before being turned ov er to the We shall also be able to furnish competent, skillful butter and cheeae-niukers when desired. We believe we caa help the dairymen on this coast by offering them these opportunities and inducements to secure the most approved appliances, and to increase the value and improve the quality of their product. We rely upon you fora fair share of your patronage and encouragement. We invite investigation and inquiry in person or by letter, and shall be glad to furnish upon request full and complete specifications, lists of machinery, prices, etc. Write us of your needs and we shall be pleased to quote you prices that we belivc will warrant vour purchasing from us.

Our speri- M. Turner will be in Santa Maria and vicinity for the next 30 days and will be pleased to give tlie dairymen all tbe information possible as to prices, size of plants, machinery necessary. Respectfully, Baker Hamilton, a pent and creamery expert OUT BATE8. The SantA Fa has withdrawn from the association and Is nw( waging Individual war with the I Southern Pacific. The cut rate tick-'et business now includes all territory I between Chicago and California common point, and will seriously effect the business of the Southern Pacific.

Very low rates are antfei- pated unless an early adjustment of differences is secured. The rate from Los Angeles to El Paso is now $10. Quite a heavy east bound travel lias been stimnlated which wi no doubt increase, if another cut is made. Let the cut be made deeper, is the prayer of every Cal-ifhrnian who Is not a railroad PUBLISHED Every Saturday; THEY ABE COMING. Hudnii of Feoplo Will be Here the Sear Future.

Hard time will keep some away, but it is driving tnaoy others to this aud other places. Those who have a little money are making the necessary MHcritice and preparing to come. Let ters of inquiry are multiplying thick and fast and they nearly all wind up with the declaration, We are going to make the move. 80 many ask practically the same questions that, in order to save time and postage, we take the privilege of answering in a general way through the autumns of the Times. Without reproducing the quest iune we will proceed to answer: Dairying pays well, especially when hogs are kept and the milk is taken to the creamery for separating.

We have no hot weather to spoil the butter, so it is as good one time as another, so far as the weather is concerned. Our land is not unreasonably high, all things consideied. and in comparison with other places on this coast our prices are extremely low, ranging from 20 to $73 per acre for good farming land All talk of over-production of fruit is about ten times more foolish it is to talk of over-production of wheat, hogs, poultry or other product common to all sections. Fruit does not grow everywhere; neither do all kinds of fruit grow to pet lection in all parts of California. In our valley, apricots always have and always will pay.

Fruit culture is like every other business; it has its ups and downs, but it will always be, with us a leading, profitable industry. We have never had a boom and that is why our land is so cheap. We will have all rail connection with San Francisco by the first of May. You can reach here fiom Frisco either by re 11 or water, via Saa Luis Obispo. Our town has about 1000 inhabitants.

We have the beet of public school advantages, including a High school. There are plenty of fish and clams on the beach; also abalones. mussels, snipe, sand pears, strawberries and other good tilings to eat, besides the finest camping driving and bathing in the world. Milkers get one dollar a day and Oor mountain streams are full of troirt Thera are thousands of quail, and cottontails) ducks, geese; In the valley in their season and ta 'the hills the game ranges all the way from a camp robber to a griz-ly hear. Deer are qsite plentiful.

The fi nest potato and bean land In this tate Is in this valley. There Is good money in raising grain here, provided you feed it to hogs. Good flour is 63 per harrel. Pota-" toes are 75 cents a sack of 100 pounds. We have good church privileges.

Presbyterian, Christian and Methodist societies all have church buildings here which are occasionally occupied by other denominations. The best way to get here from Kansas City Is via the Santa Fe to Los Angeles. thence up the coist, or via the Colorado Midland to Frisco and down the coast either by rail or water. There are no mosquitoes, and but few flies, owing to the cool nights all summer. Stove wood Is 65 per cord, delivered, cut into stove length and corded up.

If you want to know any move write to us. With all the advertising which tlm State received at the World's Fair; all the inducements offered bv tlie Midwinter Fair and cheap railroad rates, west hound tourist travel has scarcely equalled that of former years, ail of which goes to show that the financial condition will no' justify any general movement of tlie people at the present time, but fhe advertising has been dnaj those who can, will come now, 'and those who are interested will come later. It is the verdict of many of cur best business men thnt this State is on the verge of a land boom far in advrnce of anything yet witnessed on Bliss coast. The reason why many people move to town is because of the superior educational and social advantages. They are willing to sacrifice the freedom and manv comforts of country life for these.

All can be combined by subdividing and settling np our valley land in small boldines. This is bound -to come and in the verv near future the villa tract, or small farm of five to ten acres will he the home of those who enjoy life most. While some of the orehards in tlie outskirts of the valley have been disinfected this winter and others are now being sprayed, there are still others which need it, but from present indications will not get it. Several specimens brought us recently show twigs badly infested with both white and blaek scale. These pests most be kept down if fruit culture is to be a success.

Hitch Logan says he will make no rash promises; he is going to Long Beach to join a company of horse de tiers. They will huv, sell, trade, train horses and break bronchos; they will jnit-dn almost anything with horses to turn an honest dollar and if they fail he will -el at liberty to return to Santa Maria at any time. Why is it that people always write for a sample copy nf tlie local paper when they want to know anvthing nimut a town or community? Simply from tlie fact that a town is judged by its newspaper. A glance at a live newspaper will siiow a list of men who help to build np a town men of en-prise and puli. The Independent it is reported on nut lioritv most that either wild man nr a at large in the Barbara, criminal is roaming hills back of Santa vr people are going east and We are going west on account -dies.

I am told the building of a wagon road from tbe upper end of our valley to Ventura is again much talked of. It sounds like railroad talk. Now is the time for Ventura to step in end get us turned that way while Kern county Is waiting for the bonds to be bought or the money to show-up for building us a road. Mot of live in Santa Barbara county and would like to spend what little money we have in it but we must do the best we can and that go to Bakersfield to trade. Quail hunting is over for this season aud I hope the Supervisors will prohibit tlie shooting ot quail in this valley liefure November 1st as the hunters flock Into nur valley in October and kill hundreds of dozens and lose many of them on account of hot weather.

A few of us hunt a little some times, but never before November. Not less than 2,000 dozen were shipped from our valley this Most of them were killed on the Calienti ranch. H. McPherson is going to finish his mansion the near futare, that is, lie will add another window and a chimney Many of tbe houses built by those who first settled our valley have been sold, torn down and moved away. This looks bad, but then no one can blame another for not wishing to live here.

We are trying for a school district and an election precinct and, of course hope to get both. While we, of the upper end of the valley are content to have the school half the year, some of those in the lower end want it all the 'ime. This is bad, but the Supervisors will have to settle this for us and of course they will not willingly do any of us an injustice. When i went into the lower neighborhood with my petition 1 imagined it was generally understood we were to ask for a district and have the time divided and was much surprised to learn that a petition had already been sent to the supervisors without the name of a single man, cast of Rnnge 28, on it. This hardly seems right to Ignore so many of us in what we are so much interested.

Our people can learn a profitable lesson from operations here. Put your land on tlie market in small tracts if you want it to sell. Just before entering the city San Luis Obispo the scene is of gratifying interest to a Santa Marian. It is railroad operations that attract the attention ot all passengers and the excited conversation which follows makes them almost forget they are to their journeys end and must exchange the P.

In a talk with Superintendent Johnson of the P. While this shows a commendable virtue in the management of the P. C.

It may also be taken as a straw, indicating that the S. P. will absorb the narrow guage, but does not want the lumber business. Be this ns it may, San Lais Obispo is happy. She has the S.
