20-SanU Maria, Times, Thursday, August 11, 1977 Nisei farm leader is Agro-business speaker Report says L. A. school district needs direction Serving our country The Agricultural Action Committee evolved from the Citizens for i Fair Farm Labor Law and another ogranizatlon chalrmaned by Kubo, the Ad Hoc Committee on Farm Labor. Kubo will discuss this new committee, how it evolved, and what it plans to do In the future. Nisei farm leader Harry Kubo from the Parller- Reedley area, will talk on the new Agricultural Action Committee at the agro- business luncheon meeting Wednesday, Aug.

17 In the Santa Maria Holiday Inn. It will be Kubo's second visit to Santa Maria to speak to area growers and agro- business representatives. He last visited here as chairman of Citizens for a Fair Farm Labor Law, the agricultural group that successfully fought proposition 14, the farm labor initiative. All persons' Interested are invited to the no- host buffet luncheon meeting. Monroe Price also told Judge Paul Egly Tuesday that the board staff is spending plenty of time trying to devise a desegregation plan acceptable to the courts but seems to lack adequate direction and creativity.

In his fourth report to Egly, who has given the district 90 days tp come up with a new proposal, Price disclosed that the staff has started to "focus more seriously" on controversial proposals to mix minority students from the state's largest district with predominately Anglo students from neighboring suburban districts. Noting that some minority youngsters from West Los Angeles are already involved in a volunteer "multicultural program" with the Beverly Hills Unified School District, he suggested: "The county superintendent, acting in councert with the Los Angeles board, might explore ways to encourge expansion of the multicultural program, including more districts as well as expanding the numbers of pupils involved. "At present, there is no incentive for districts such as Redondo Beach, Palos Verdes, Burba nk and Glendale to accept minority student transfers from the Los Angeles district or other districts with substantial numbers of minority segregated schools. Price also suggested that the district appoint a deputy superintendent to "formulate integration plan alternatives" and consult with experts outside the system to help the staff develop creative alternative plans. While praising the staff for Working "tirelessly toward compliance" with Egly's directive, he said it is still hampered by "undefined goals," Kubo also is president of the Nlese Farmers League and a member of the board of trustees of the Parller Unified School District and the California State Fair Advisory Commission.
