Clark, son of George F. and Gaylen M. Clark, of Santa Ginger R. DeSanto eta Bare, son of Marceliso and Lidia Baro of Guadalupe, has completed basic training at Fort Dlx, N.J. During the training, students received instruction in drill and ceremonies, military justice, first aid, and Army history and traditions.

Air Force Tech. Sgt James N. Zelkan has arrived for duty at Falrchild AFB, Wash, Zelkan is a structural technical with the 92nd Civil Engineering Squadron. His wife, Karen, is the daiigh- -ter of Allen and Nancy A. Cottam of Lompoc.

Spec. James A. Sumrall has completed a U.S. Army primary leadership course. He is a missile crewmember with the 9th Field Artillery in West Germany.

Sumrall is the son of Karen E. Gurgiolo of Nipomo. He is a 1983 graduate of Arroyo Grande High School. Ted E. Heath, son of Ted Heath of Lompoc, has been promoted in Klmbsrly M.

McGahey the U.S. Army to the rank of major. Heath is a personnel plans officer with the 7th Theater Army Area Command in West Germany. He is a 1974 graduate of Lompoc Senior High School and a 1978 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael G. Burns, son of Billie Mitchell, of Grover City has arrived in Norfolk, after completion of a six-month, around-the-world deployment while serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, now at its new home port in Norfolk. During the deployment, Burns participated In Pacific Exercise1 (PACEX) 89. PACEX was the largest exercise conducted since World War II and incorporated the operation of several battle groups including multi-national and multi-service units in the waters of Japan and South Korea. He is a 1S82 graduate of Arroyo Grande High School and joined the Navy in April 1986.

1 is. Vrw r- j- Former private to be honored By Marit Pearson GILROY, Calif. Jim Boyd was preparing breakfast at a when he heard a dog bark, looked up, and saw in the distance a group of armed men rapidly approaching. The men were Japanese. And Boyd was in the Philippine jungle.

It was lUZ. "I had an (enemy) officer tome up so close to me I could have reached up and touched his word," said the 72-year-old Boyd, recalling that he covered himself with rattan leaves to hide. Boyd, now a retired Army sergeant who was maintenance man for the 17th Armored Ordnance Co. on Luzon Island during World War II, spent 1,027 days nearly three years in the jungle as an escaped prisoner of war, fighting alongside U.S. and Filipino guerrillas.

For this, and for his work as a tack and artillery specialist, Boyd is one of 10 people this year being inducted into the Army's Ordnance Hall of Fame. The Ordnance Hall of Fame was organized to improve the morale of the Ordnance Corps and it serves as a repository of the history of the Ordnance regiment. The Hall of Fame provides recognition of military or civilian personnel for outstanding contributions to the Army ordnance mission. The former Pvt. Boyd is the only enlisted man receiving the award this yeir; the nine others are either officers or senior service executives.

The Ordnance Corps honor will focus on the retired prune farmer and longtime Gilroy resident's achievements as a tank and artillery specialist and his achievements while fighting underground with guerrillas. After the "Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, a tank group had deployed into the Luzon province and prepared for battle. But they found themselves facing Japanese who had high-explosive ammunition, something the tank group didn't have. Boyd and the other armament mechanics modified more than 1.CO0 rounds, of ammunition lor the tank group's guns so that tfeey could equitably fight the Japanese. Boyd is also being honored for bis recovery of critical weaponry from the jungle.
