Saturday, April 19. 1969, Santa Maria, Times Last Mass Into ned In St. Pa trick towers, each topped" with a cross. I The beUMrig spire, with a taller cross, has served as a landmark to numerous travelers nearby Highway 101. This church and others of its era once 1 gave Arroyo Grande the title "city of church steeples." Though progress and parish growth make a new building mandatory, more than a few-Catholic and Protestant alike will be saddened to know Old St.

Patrick's has been banned from use. Tomorrow, Mass will be celebrated in the adjacent hall, where altar and pews are now in place. This building, erected in 1957, cost $22,000 with $10,000 bequeathed from J. J. Schnyder, long-time Arroyo Grande By DORIS OLSEN Times Staff Writer ARROYO GRANDE-Forty of the faithful last Monday entered St.

Patrick's Catholic Church to hear the Rev. Fr. Laurence CSullivan intone the Mass. They left in sadness. As 'doors of the venerable structure shut behind them, an era ended.

This was the last Mass said in this building. A safety factor has brought condemnation and doom to the 83-year-old church. Since 1886 the Branch St. building has been an object of pride to local citizens. It was new when the township was in infancy.

Now footsteps of the devout have worn thin' the ancient cement steps leading to an entry flanked by two tall day worshippers are third- and fourth-generation parishioners. Parish origins are lost in antiquity, but it is known they Ee-date the structure by at ist a decade. First priest was Father Michael Lynch, sent from Mission Santa Ynez. His first recorded entry shows that on Dec. 6, 1874, he baptized Manuel, son of Juan and Rosalie Netto, in Guadalupe.

Ground Was broken for the church structure in Sept. 1885. On Aug. 22, 1886, Arthur Streeter Dana was the fust child baptized inside. He was the son of Mr.

and Mrs. Jose Ramon Dana, born May 23, 1886. Don Jose Ramon was 11th child of Capt. and Mrs. William G.

Dana, Nipomo rancho grantees, Coincidentally, Arthur Dana 'died last year in Contra Costa County. He was 82. His demise came less than a year before that of his baptismal church. First wedding in the Nov. 21, 1886, united Maximo Ruiz and Martina Ayala.

First requiem mass, May 29, 1887, was celebrated for Manuel de Vafla Terry, Arroyo Grande. Last wedding in the church was April 12, when Lillian Johnston became the, bride of Ralph Leeson, y.S. Navy, from, Texas. Mrs. Leeson is a niecjf Mrs.

Pat Casil. The last child baptized was Kelli Marie Bigger, on April 13. She is the daughter of John R. and Marlene Amaral Bigger and was born March 25, 1969 in Santa Maria. Requiem Mass for Terry The present lite, encompassing more than one and a half acres, is up for along with the hall and rectoryr now sheltering Father O'Sullivan and Father Colm O'Connor.

When a new church, still in planning stages, is erected it will be built on lands adjacent to St. Patrick's parochial, school. The location is near northern boundaries of the city overlooking Highway 101. Costs are estimated at $100,000, with capacity set for nearly 600. The present structure originally is believed to have cost less than $750 and held a maximum 200 worshippers.

Later, between 1903-20, the towers were added and increased capacity by 50. The edifice is of redwood lumber, built with a high-pitched roof. Key marks of beauty are 19 leaded stained glass memorial windows. These are encased in wood. Efforts will be made to incorporate the windows, in the new structure, Father O'Sullivan said.

In its youth, the Branch St church was the only of its kind between Missions Santa Ynez on the south and San Luis Obispo on the north. The nearest Catholic Church, other than the missions, was one in Lompoc founded in 1875. Many early-day Santa Maria (then Central City) families are listed in old records. They, as well as those from Eos Alamos, Nipomo and Guadalupe, traveled via wagon and horseback to worship in Arroyo Grande. This will be voted upon following the presentation. Christian Science "What doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, ana to wauc humbly with thy God?" This verse frorr Micah sets the theme of the Bible Lesson-Sermon on "Doctrine of Atonement" which will be heard Sunday in all Christian Science churches. Wednesday evening testimony meetings are also held at 8 p.m. Vane including Father O'Sullivan. Most have remained from one to five years.

Two, Father F. M. Lack, 1903-1920 and Very Rev. Msgr. James Marron, 1951-68, served 17 years each.

OTSuflivan came 1968. It is interesting to note uw inn anu ia, rrf Lynch and Fr. O'Sullivan, both Irish, were educated at All Hollows Seminary, Dublin, Ireland. Among family names which remained synonymous jth the parish are Porter, Marsalek, Senes, Phelan, Terry, Dana, Quaresma, Egan, Gularte, Ormonde, and many others.
