Santa Maria Timet Wednesday, March 29, 1995 A-7 OBITUARIES Patricia Lee Smith OTHER DEATHS Hugh O'Connor LOS ANGELES (AP) A tearful Carroll O'Connor declared thai his son's long history of drug use led to his apparent decision to kill himself with a gunshot to the head "My son Hugh, a beautiful boy, Romeo Ausan of Guadalupe; sisters Emma Morente of the Philippines, Elsa De Jesus of San Francisco, and Elma Reisdorf of Highland; brothers Adam Ausan of the Philippines. Anacleto Ausan of Los Angeles. Alex Ausan. Allan Ausan, and Alhel Ausan, all of Santa Maria; his mother Maria Ausan of- Guadalupe; three grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation is from 2-8 p.m.

Friday at the mortuary. Mr. Bailes was born April 20. 1927, in Adah. Pa.

He was a resident of Santa Maria since I960. Mr. Bailes was a veteran of World War II and Korea, serving with the U.S. Navy. He worked for Lockheed Missile Space Corporation for 27 years in quality control.

He retired in 1968. Survivors include his wife of 48 yean Rhea E. Bailes of Santa Maria; daughter Sharon Kunsman of Lancaster, sons Bruce Bailes and Roger Bailes, both of Santa Maria; sisters Edith Clingan of Hopwood, Patricia White of Uniontown. Frances Bryner of Con-nesville. and Sue Farmer of Uniontown.

brothers Lawrence Bailes of Glen Rogers. W.Va., Robert Bailes of Canoga Park, and William Bailes of Norco; seven grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. 1903, in Lethbridge, Alberta. Canada. She moved to Los Angeles county in September 1921 and attended the Bible Institute of Lot Angeles. Mrs. Lanier was naturalized in September 1930.

She married Bill Lanier in August 1924, residing in Los Angeles county prior to moving to Ventura county in 1936. Mrs. Lanier was a resident of Santa Paula for 35 years. Mr. and Mrs.

Lanier graduated from the Child Evangelism Institute in 1951 and were the first county directors, serving until retiring in 1968. Mrs. Lanier was a member of the First Baptist Church of Santa Paula, serving as Sunday school teacher and superintendent in earlier years. Survivors include her daughters Helen R. Heil of Guadalupe.

Grace E. Carver of Ventura, and Fern A. Collins of Sugerland. Texas; brothers Robert E. McKay of San Mateo, and Earl L.

McKay of Tehachapi; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill Lanier of 61 years in 1985. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Guadalupe Community Church, P.O. Box Guadalupe. CA 93434.

Brown, 63, of Guadalupe. Cremation will be followed by private inummcnt at Santa Maria Cemetery. He died of natural causes March 27, 1995. at his home. Mr.

Brown was born March 14, 1932, in Lyon. Kan. He served with the U.S. Air Force, retiring after 20 years. Mr.

Brown worked for the Santa Maria Valley Railroad for many years as an electrician. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Guadalupe. Survivors include his wife Linda Brown of Guadalupe; sons James D. Brown of Guadalupe, and Kenneth E. Brown of Florida; a brother Hobert Brown of Oswego.

a sister Alice Skaggs of Oswego, and six grandchildren. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his granddaughter Jennifer Castillo in 1985. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2024 De la Vina 'B'. Santa Barbara.

He died following an illness March 20, 1995, at a Palm Springs hospital. Mr. Hill was bom April 26. 1929. in San Luis Obispo He attended schools in San Luis Obispo prior to serving with the U.S.

Navy. Mr. Hill worked at the California Men's Colony as a correctional officer prior to becoming disabled While a local resident he was a member of the San Luis Obispo' King David's Masonic Lodge No. 209. the Santa Barbara Scottish Rites, the San Luis Obispo Shnne, the Elks Lodge No.

322. and the Shriners Clowns Upon retiring to Palm Springs he was a member of the Palm Springs Masonic Lodge and the Palm Springs Shrine. Survivors include his wife Anita Hill of Palm Springs; stepdaughter Ba rbara Trout of Palm Springs; sisters Juanita E. Gray of San Luis Obispo, and Dolores Orvis of Santa Maria; three nieces, and two nephews. Arrangements were under the direction of Emmer-son-Bartlett Memorial Chapel, Yucaipa.

late Tuesday. Hugh Edward O'Connor, 33, was found shot to death at about 6:30 p.m. in a Pacific Palisades home owned by the O'Connor family. The elder O'Connor, 71, called police midday Tuesday to report that his son was despondent and had access to guns, said Officer Arthur Holmes. Carroll O'Connor is best known from his role as Archie Bunker in CBS sitcom "All in the Family." Currently, he plays the main character Chief Bill Gillespie on the series "In the Heat of the Night." The younger O'Connor played a deputy on the show.
