Farmers discussing Japanese boycott SAN FRANCISCO (AP) California farm organizations say they'll boycott Japanese imports unless Japan relaxes the produce quarantine prompted by the Mediterranean fruit fly infestation. "There are a lot of Datsuns, Toyotas and Sony televisions on farms around the whole state," said Les Hubbard, an executive of the Western Growers Association. The farmers' boycott is slated to begin Feb. 1. All Californiads will be urged in newspaper ads by farm groups to boycott Japanese products, Hubbard said.

Japan, alarmed at the spread of the medflies, has banned most types of California produce unless it has been fumigated, a costly process that cannot be used on all fruits and also could pose health risks to packers and othexs'involved in fumigation. The quarantine The losses xacgb from $1.25 million in honeydew melons to $6 million in oranges. U.S. agriculture officials next week will ask the Japanese to limit the quarantine to produce from areas actually infested by medflies, rather than all California produce. Growers would accept that solution, Hubbard said.
