Saturday, Feb. 1, 1919 THE SANTA MARIA DAILY TIMES Page Fift WILLARD GIVES REAL SERVICE We recently picked yp a little advertising folder, published by the Willard Storage Battery Company which impressed us strongly by its evident sincerity. It is called Our Idm of Fervice and Is signed by Mr. Willard himself. One thing he says in his statement seems to sound the keynote of modern, broad-minded, present day business, When we are wrong we admit it, when customer is wrong we must prove it.

These sixteen words seem to typify the succesful business man big enough to admit that he may sometimes be wrong and courageous enough to voluntarily accept the burden of proving when ne Is right. And, Say Messrs Lukeman Wood, the local Willard representatives, Mr. Willard not only W. W. Stokrs, of the firm of Dowers Stokes is optimistic regarding Ford business everywhere and advised that the Ford factory is attaining production, which if continued, will shortly put this factory upon the same tremendous p-oduction basis that it enjoyed before the war started.

Many rumors have been circulated regarding the future policies on Fords and one to the effect that the prices of -Ford cars would drop. This has been definitely denied by Motor cars are in greater demand today than ever before in the history of the automobile Industries In this country. Thousands of machines have been junked in the last year and a half and not replaced due to the war and the necessary curtailment- of production. Thousands of other car owners are going to get new machines this year. They used their cars last yar because they Wanted to get along with the old car on account of the war.

The war is over now and the public wants automobiles, according to E. D. Rubel, of the Crescent Garage, distributor of Dodge Brothers motor cars here. We have had several shipments of D. B.

Mr. Rubel states that business was exceptionally good through 1918 and predicts even a better year for 1919. Federal QUR exclu5 give Double Cable-Base insures greater' tire mileage. He wants value' and he knows value. He not only demands that hh motor car express in a large measure his own personality, satisfy his own taste in distinctive body lines, give maximum comfort and drive easily and without physical exertion, hut he also demands abllitv.

Next to the well-konwn flu, there probably is nothing the average motorist dreads as much as he does a conglomeration of figures and statistics.

However, as the statisticians would have to go to work if some one did not encourage them, he has gathered these few facts for the benefit of one certain type the party who thinks tire prices will come down immediately: (1.) When the curtailment of manufacture of tires was made on August 1, last year, it was definitely announced by the government that prices could not be raised. Therefore, no rise in price has been put on tires, and there is none to come off. Prices areA still based on the cost of materials and labor. (2.) There is nothing in the price of Tubber, (otton, or labor the main items in tire manufacture which would yet warrant a drop. (3.) The tire manufacturing capacity of the country is tires per annum.

(4.) The automobile manufacturers say that the automobile supply Is 2,000,000 cars short of the demand. (5.) These 2,000,000 cars will be made as quickly as the manufacturers can get Into production and they must have tires before they can be put on the road. (6.) Eight milion tires are required for these new cars or one-third of the total tire manufacturing capacity of the country. (7.) 'fire -demand on the road 'at the present time 'is a little oyer 6.000 000 cars. This means 30 000,000 tires or double the tire business in 1916.

Local tire dealers believe that the market will soon adjust itself and that while tire prices may not drop at once they will gradually return to normal figures. Automobile owners will do more touring this year than ever before, as indicated by those who are purchasing new motor cars. Experience has taught the automobile salesman that the general trend of expression of the man when purchasing a motor car is indicative of his future plans with the vehicle, although no direct statement 'may ever be made. For this reason J. F.

Kaar, Studebaker distributor, prophesies this record which is based on hW past deductions which have c6me true. According to Kaar the amount of mileage a car will give before It Is overhauled is one of the principal questions of the buyer of today. He wants to know where expert service on the make of car he is considering ca nbe had not only In California but all over the coast and In fact all his questioning is along these lines. Mr. Kaar expects two carloads of Studebakers to arrive here in the near future.

With the final completion the Studebaker corporations new plant in South Bend, this years output from this factory will be 100,000 of the popular 4-cylinder models. This plant has been under construction since 1916. The Detroit. Michigan plant will supply 60,000 of both the Big and the' Light-Six models this season. Overland wire.
